Proper selection of calibration gases and regulators are critical for the proper operation of process gas analyzers, toxic and combustible gas detection systems, and continuous emissions monitors. Depending on the application, calibration gases are either supplied in large cylinders that are typically left in place, or small cylinders that are easy to carry from one location to another. Large gas cylinders can often be refilled. The smaller gas cylinders used to be disposable, but newer portable cylinders can be returned for refilling or recycling.
A cylinder regulator is needed to reduce the high pressure in the gas cylinder to a lower pressure that is safe for the analyzer being calibrated. All regulators are not the same. There are widely differing specifications for leak ratings, materials of construction, and repairability. Regulators can be made from brass, chrome-plated brass, stainless steel, and stainless steel that is treated with a corrosion resistant material, such as Dursan, that provides significantly longer life when used with highly corrosive gases (Cl2, HCl, SO2, etc). WB Wells Co has extensive experience in the supply of calibration gases and regulators and can guide you in the proper selection of calibration gases and regulators.
